Immersive Porn: Who Sees, Who is Seen? – VR, Desire, and the Politics of the Gaze

Tech and s*x: two topics which always have strived to create authenticity and up-close experiences. The promise remains: "Feel it real - experience transformation, evolution and change." But in which sociopolitical direction is this supposed progress moving? Daliah Schulte and Anna-Karina Vollmer provide insights into the transformative effect of virtual reality on pOrnOgraphy and discuss how VR technologies are redefining physicality and intimacy. Through theoretical inputs and practical VR experiences, power structures are questioned together and emancipatory possibilities of virtual realities in the discourse on s*x work are explored. The workshop concludes with a reflection on how and whether VR can serve as a tool for inclusive and consensual sexuality.

Facilitator CV: Anna-Karina Vollmer is a s*x educator and co-founder of the Cologne Institute for S*xual Self-Determination (KISS e.V.). Her work focuses on digital culture and pOrnOgraphy. Daliah Schulte is a VR expert, board member of YAYA e.V. and focuses her work on possibilities for intersectional and innovative cultural design.

Accessibility: No previous knowledge is required. All interactions are designed to be understandable in spoken English. The use of VR glasses during the workshop is optional, initially for two volunteers. Alternatives will be offered to all others who cannot or do not want to use them.
